Kataklysm - Meditations

Kataklysm made a pretty decently sized wave for a band of their popularity status in 2015 with Of Ghosts and Gods, after over two decades of persistence at their melodic death metal craft. Yet the Canadians’ new album, Meditations, brings less potency and less to help the band ride their own wave, instead falling back into the murk of generic melodic death metal.
There are a few shining moments on the album, though. “Narcissist” has a pretty ripping didgeridoo-flavored introduction, “Bend the Arc, Cut the Cord” leads with a simple, yet somewhat emotive guitar motif, and “Outsider” also has a noticeably tight groove at its spine.
But for the most part, Meditations is a serviceable melodeath record at best, and I don’t think it’ll be gaining the band too many new fans.
