Primus - The Desaturating Seven

At just 37 minutes of meandering, run-of-the-mill, even predictably quirky Primus music, this is seemingly their most unenthusiastic effort to date. I’ll be honest, I only gave this thing 3 listens front-to-back when it came out, but the songs they kept releasing from the album did nothing to water my mouth and they sounded no more exciting as a cohesive project than they did by themselves. As with any Primus album, Les’ virtuoso bass playing is up front in the mix and a central focus of many of the songs, but his bass lines lack the punch of early Primus records and nothing especially captivating comes from out of his bass amp on this project. Likewise, the effects-laden, warble-y guitar work behind him is little more than a numbing fuzz of sound that just continued to push my attention away from this album. While it was toted as a sort of return to the more funky days of Primus’ history, the immersion in the funky rock and metal they used to master is as half-assed as the concept the album presents.
