Infernal Conjuration - Infernale Metallum Mortis

Infernal Conjuration are a rather seasoned Mexican trio who have been working  in other bands separately and on their way toward this debut album now for over a decade. While the band wears their old-school death and black metal influences, especially Morbid Angel and Sepultura, loud and proud on their sleeves, that doesn’t make this album worth disregarding for its lack of aesthetic originality alone. In fact, Infernal Conjuration display such a proficiency with early 90’s black/thrash-influenced death metal that tends to come across rather ham-fisted by most other bands, so I don’t particularly mind their more retro styling at all. It’s great to hear wailing thrash-influenced guitar solos and palm-muted rhythms that actually capture that classic feel, thick and rumbling bass lines that get their own time in the spotlight, and slightly echoed blackened snarls that hearken to the cavernous furt of Hell Awaits. I have always been a fan of bands who can show that there is still plenty to create from older genres within metal, and Infernal Conjuration surely do a fine job of bringing thrashy 90’s death metal to the modern era. If this is the niche they intend to fill, I think they are well poised to do so, but I know that it will take consistency and stamina to be able to hold on to it. For now, though, I’m happy with what they’re offering to start.
Only 90’s kids will remember this/10
